FAQs

What does “80 × 80 mm” actually mean?
Normally it refers to 80 mm in width of the paper (the width of the paper) and 80 mm in outer diameter of the roll (the total thickness of the roll), but not 80 meters. Certain sellers/listings are inconsistent, and therefore it is important to recheck that a vendor is using width x diameter (the majority of them) or width x length.
Will an 80×80 roll fit my printer?
Test three things: the width of the paper that your printer supports (must support 80 mm); the maximum roll diameter that your printer can hold (typically in the range of 80 mm with full-size POS printers); and the core/spindle inner diameter (common ones are 12-12.5 mm). By matching all three of them, the roll will fit. In case you do not know, check the paper specs of your printer model or locate the printer manual.
How long is an 80×80 roll — how many meters or receipts will I get?
The answer is not a simple one: it will depend on the paper thickness (GSM). Usual 80x80rolls are in the range of about 50 m to approximately 90 m based on GSM, with thicker paper (greater GSM) yielding fewer meters on some diameters. The amount of the roll is determined by the average number of receipts in a roll, e.g., a roll of 60 m will hold approximately 300 receipts with majors of 20 cm receipts.
What core (inner diameter) and box quantities should I expect?
The majority of commercial 80 x 80mm thermal till rolls are supplied with a plastic core with an inner diameter of approximately 1212.5 mm (although other cores are also available with some suppliers). The packs are available in different amounts (5, 10, 50, and so on) of boxes, and thus, it is a good idea to read product specifications, including core size, prior to purchase to prevent it from coming as a surprise.
How long do thermal rolls and prints last (shelf life & fade resistance)?
Storage and chemistry are important. Rolls that are not printed and kept cool/dry/dark will often last 2-5 years; printed thermal receipts may fade when exposed to heat, sunlight, oils, or solvents. To use archival requirements, use long-life or top-coated thermal papers and keep the prints out of the light and heat. Never disobey the storage instructions of the paper maker.
Are thermal till rolls safe? Do they contain BPA / BPS?
The chemical developers who were traditionally used in thermal papers are BPS or BPA. Research and new enforcement efforts indicate that lots of receipts still include bisphenols, and there exist health/environment issues for the frequent handlers (i.e., cashiers). To minimize exposure: request BPA-/BPS-free or alternative developer papers from suppliers, use digital receipts where available, and reduce long-term contact with the skin.
