What exactly are “DYMO 99012 compatible labels”?
They are direct-thermal address/large labels, marketed as a replacement to DYMO part 99012 (approximately 36 mm x 89 mm / 1 3/8 x 3 1/2). They are sold by third parties like MegaLabels, advertising themselves as providing the same roll format to feed into the LabelWriter printers as the original manufacturers.
How many labels are on a roll — and why do product pages sometimes say different numbers?
Dymo 99012 compatible labels are typically rated at roughly 260 labels per roll. This creates confusion since one seller will be selling one roll (260), and another can be selling in multi-packs (2 roll, 10 roll, etc.) so the listing will have 260, 520, 2x260, 3x260, etc.
Which DYMO printers will accept compatible 99012 rolls?
All 300/310/320/330/400/450 families of LabelWriter will take a 99012-sized roll. However, there are later models (LabelWriter 550 series, 5XL, and a few specialty models) that can take chipped rolls or alternate cartridges - and therefore, the specific printer may not take all generic rolls. Invoice doubtful roll in matches roll peaked in your list of printer compatibility.
Are compatible (third-party) 99012 labels safe to use — any ideas?
Yes—but not all are good. Compatibles of excellent quality will print well and save money, whilst those of inferior quality may create sticky residue, malfunction, leave excessive glue on the spool, or have weaker adhesive. Check seller accounts (find comments about jam or gumming) and purchase it from sellers with a suitable return policy. Note also that some compatible rolls sold with chips are claimed to support any printer they have - ensure that the roll that you use is itself chipped if you will also need to use a chipped roll with a 550/5XL.
These are thermal labels — will the print fade or get ruined? How long do they last?
They are direct-thermal: ink is not needed to create the image; it is made by heating. That puts a crisp black print on it but leaves the label prone to heat, sunlight, oils and some chemicals - contact with representation causes prints to fade or darken. The design and testing of DYMO, noted in the help documentation and in the community report, suggest that labels should not be stored where they can be exposed to UV/heat, nor can they be touched by problems relating to PVC/vinyl or solvents.
Quick loading/troubleshooting tips so you don’t waste labels or time
Grab the roll, and push it firmly onto the spindle roller, shove the edge of the label into the feed slot, ensure the spool guide does not pinch the roll, and press the feed/form-feed. If you encounter wrinkling, misfeeds, or sticky residues, first roll off the material, then check if there is too much glue or if the core is too loose. Next, refit the spool with a clean roll and consider looking for another roll from a different seller if problems persist. When your printer is a 550/5XL and the roll does not identify (not recognized), the roll might have no chip - either find refrigerated rolls to have a chip (either by marking it as chipped) or purchase authentic DYMO cartridges.
